This Privacy Policy describes how the Mafrend mobile application (the “App”) and its accompanying backend at mafrend.com (the “Service”) process information. This policy reflects the App’s current functionality only. If the App’s behavior changes, this page will be updated.

Overview

Mafrend displays a map centered on your current location and lets you sign in using your choice of identity provider through OpenID Connect. The App does not include advertising or analytics SDKs and does not sell personal data.

Data We Collect and Process

• Location (When In Use). With your permission, the App uses your device location to show your position on the map and to focus the map view. Location data is used in-app for display only. We do not upload your location data to our servers or store it.
• Account Information from Your Identity Provider. When you sign in, the App uses OpenID Connect (via ZITADEL) to authenticate you and keep you signed in (requested scopes: openid, profile, email, offline_access). This provides an ID/access token and may include your basic profile information (e.g., name, email) from your chosen identity provider (Google or Apple). These tokens are stored on your device (iOS Keychain; Android app storage via DataStore; desktop local app storage). We do not persist user profiles on our backend.
• Technical Data. When you use the App or access map tiles and other web assets, standard internet metadata such as IP address, device/OS, and request headers are processed by the relevant servers to deliver content. We do not use this for profiling.

How We Use Data

• To display your current position on the map within the App.
• To authenticate you via your chosen identity provider and keep you signed in (using tokens stored on your device).
• To serve map tiles, fonts, and sprites required to render the map.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share personal data with advertisers. Data may be shared with third-party service providers strictly as needed to operate the App, as described below.

Third-Party Services

• ZITADEL (OpenID Connect Provider). Used for authentication and token management. During sign-in, ZITADEL and your chosen provider (Google or Apple) process your sign-in information per their own privacy policies.
• Identity Providers (Google, Apple). If you choose to sign in with Google or Apple, they may provide your basic profile information to ZITADEL and the App as permitted by you.
• OpenFreeMap Tiles. Map tiles are fetched from tiles.openfreemap.org. Their servers receive your IP address and standard request information in order to deliver tiles.
• Mafrend Static Assets. Map sprites and fonts are served from mafrend.com to render the map UI.

Cookies and Local Storage

• The App stores authentication tokens locally on your device to keep you signed in and to refresh your session (offline_access scope). You can sign out in the App to remove these tokens.
• The backend does not set tracking cookies.

Data Retention

• Location. Not persisted by us; used transiently on-device for map display.
• Auth Tokens. Stored on your device until you sign out or remove the App. We do not persist user profiles on our backend.

Security

• Transport is protected with HTTPS where supported.
• Tokens are stored using platform-secure storage mechanisms (e.g., iOS Keychain).

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Since the App stores tokens on your device and does not upload location data to our servers, signing out will remove tokens from the device. If you have questions about data we may process via authentication, contact us using the email below.

Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the App. We will update the “Last updated” date above when changes are made.

• You must be able to form a binding contract with Mafrend to use the Service.

• You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account while using the Service.
• You must provide accurate information to identity providers and comply with their terms.

2. Acceptable Use

• Do not misuse the Service, interfere with its operation, or access it using a method other than the interfaces and instructions we provide.
• Do not attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or derive source code, except to the extent permitted by applicable law.
• Do not use the Service to violate any law or the rights of others, including intellectual property and privacy rights.
• Do not attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service or its related systems.

3. Third‑Party Services and Content

The Service integrates with third parties such as ZITADEL (authentication) and OpenFreeMap (map tiles). Your use of those services is subject to their own terms and policies. Mafrend is not responsible for third‑party services or content. Map tiles are fetched from tiles.openfreemap.org, and sprites/fonts from mafrend.com to render the map UI.

4. Intellectual Property

The Service, including software, text, graphics, and logos, is owned by Mafrend or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non‑exclusive, non‑transferable, revocable license to use the App for personal, non‑commercial purposes.

5. Disclaimers

• The Service is provided on an “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non‑infringement.
• We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error‑free, or that any defects will be corrected.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Mafrend and its contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from (a) your use of or inability to use the Service; (b) any unauthorized access to or use of our servers and/or any personal information stored therein; or (c) any third‑party conduct or content. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability to the extent it cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law. You use the Service at your own risk. In no event shall our aggregate liability exceed the amount you paid to use the Service in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim (typically $0 for the App).

7. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we believe you have violated these Terms or if we discontinue the Service. You may stop using the Service at any time.

8. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable in your place of residence unless otherwise required by mandatory law. Where permitted, disputes will be resolved in the courts having jurisdiction over Mafrend’s principal place of business. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

9. Changes to These Terms

We may modify these Terms to reflect changes in the App or legal requirements. We will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page when changes are made. Your continued use after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the changes, you must stop using the Service. We may notify users of significant changes via in‑app notices or other reasonable means.
